This unique race course of 16.19 kilometers allows you to embark on a journey of more than 400 years of Black history. You will be transported back in time to experience the Transatlantic Slave Trade, the American Civil War, the Jim Crow Era, the Civil Rights Movement, as well as present-day reflections on Black history, culture and community.

The course features the highlights of the short route as well as Rocket’s Landing and Ancarrow’s Landing, the places where Africans first set foot on American soil after been shipped upstream to Richmond. In addition it stretches into Historic Jackson Ward, Richmond’s African American neighborhood that’s home to the Black History Museum of Virginia and many of the city’s stunning street art.

As you cross the James River twice during this experience, take a moment to reflect on the forced voyage of enslaved Africans from West Africa to the Americas across the Atlantic Ocean (Middle Passage). Honor the sacrifices the ancestors of our Black community had to endure and celebrate the progress we have made.
